JEWISH MONUMENTS IN SÁTORALJAÚJHELY
The street where Jewish shops were once found
Rákóczi Street

Today’s Rákóczi Street, formerly known as “Híd Street” (“Bridge Street”) and then “Új-Híd Street (“New Bridge Street”), became “the street of Jewish merchants” in the early twentieth century. More than 100 Jewish shops sold various consumer goods and crops and provided an array of services.

Images of the buildings which once stood on this street are preserved by postcards made by Jewish printing houses and booksellers.

In the “merchants’ street,” which today is stretch of Main Street (Kazinczy Street) and Vasvári Pál Street, the shops were preserved in a good condition (with two exceptions). The main street is now the trade center of downtown Sátoraljaújhely, “today’s shopping street,” given the shops which have been reopened there. Images of the buildings which once stood can be found in the video walk available at this link.
