In 1886, the Jewish Religious Community in Sátoraljaújhely broke into three separate groups. The Jewish Community based on the Status Quo was the parent organization of the Jewish religious communities.

“The foundation stone of the new ‘Status Quo Synagogue’ was laid on June 22, in the presence of 1,000 people celebrating the event.” (Zemplén, 26. sz. 1887.) The building was designed by architect Gyula Jemnik from Budapest.

“The synagogue was opened with great ceremony on August 30, 1888. The building, which was designed with impressive proportions, was constructed by entrepreneur Gyula Háber from Sátoraljaújhely.” (Zemplén, 26. 1888.)

In 1943, the synagogue became the center of the ghetto. Then, in the 1960s, it was repurposed to function as a department store. Its façade is commemorated by a memorial plaque on the original wall of the building.
